How to Work with
Photos in PAF
To Add Photos To PAF:
1. Scan your picture and
save in the folder of your choice. Write it down so that you know where
it is
and can find it later. You can scan photos or other items.
2. Once you are in PAF click on the Multimedia button. (it looks like a camera)
3. Click ADD. Under Item Type select Photo, Sound Clip or Video Clip.
4. Under File name click on Browse and find the file where your item is and open it.
5. Type a Caption.
The caption is displayed in the scrapbook and on the Multimedia Collection
screen. It will help identify each item on the list.
6. Type a Description.
The description should contain information such as the time the photo was
taken, place, who participated in the recording, etc. It is displayed in the
scrapbook.
Click OK. Tip: To change the description, click on Modify
and retype what ever you need to,
then click OK. Tip: In scrapbooks and slideshows, the multimedia
items will appear in the
order shown on the Multimedia Collection screen. To
change the order, highlight an item. Click
the up arrow or the down arrow
to move it up or down the list.
7. To select a default
photo, click the photo on the list and click Make Default. To clear the
default photo simply click Clear Default and the asterisk will
disappear. Tip: The default photo
is marked with an asterisk
(*). You can print the default photo on reports, display it on the
Family View
screen and include it on Web pages.
8. If you need to remove an item click Remove and then click Yes.
9. To close the window
click Save at the bottom left. If you don’t, you will lose all the
items you
added.
To Edit Photos In PAF:
1. In the Multimedia window click Edit Photo.
2. If needed, crop the
photo by holding the left mouse button down at the top left of the part of the
photo you want to keep and drag the cursor to the lower right part of the photo
that you want to
keep. Release the mouse button. Repeat until you are happy
with the photo. Tip: To make
small adjustments to the cropping, use
the arrows in the Crop From box on the screen. If you
do not like the
cropped photo, click Reset. The photo returns to its original size.
3. If needed, use the buttons at the bottom of the displayed photo to rotate or flip the photo.
Scrapbook and Slideshow:
The Scrapbook displays 6 of an individual’s photos at a time with each photos description on a page. If you have more photos, you can use the right and left arrow buttons in the lower corners of the Scrapbook to move from page to page. The Scrapbook contains audio clips if you attach them to the photos. (it does not include Video clips) If you attach an audio clip to a photo and then view the scrapbook, a button that looks like a speaker appears next to the photo. You can click the button to hear the audio clip.
To set Preferences in the Multimedia window:
1.
Go to Tools, Preferences, and Multimedia. In the Slide Show
box you can set the amount of
time you want to see each photo. You can also
change the Slide size-to-screen ratio. In the
Background Color
box select either Slideshow or Scrapbook then click the Color
box. Select a
color then click OK.
To attach a sound to the photo:
1. From the Multimedia Collection screen, click Edit Photo.
2. Under Attached sound click Browse and find the file. Open it. Click OK.
To NOT include a photo or change default time in the Slideshow:
1. From the Multimedia Collection screen, click Edit Photo.
2. If you do not want to
include the highlighted photo in the slideshow, uncheck Include in
Slideshow.
3. If the item should be
displayed for a different amount of time than the default time, type the
number
in seconds and tenths of seconds.
4. Click OK.
Tip: If you want a sound clip to play during the
slideshow, put it at the top of the list
of multimedia items. The sound clip
plays until it reaches a video clip or another sound clip.
Printing Photos:
You can print photos on pedigree charts, family group records, Ahnentafel charts, individual summaries, and scrapbooks. On the screen for each of these reports is an option to include photos. If you click that option, the Photos button becomes available. Click the Photos button to specify (in most cases) photo size, placement, and whether space should be reserved for a photo if an individual does not have a default photo.
1. From the Reports and Charts screen, check Include Photos then click Photos (on the right).
2. From the Size
box, choose the photo Height and Width you want for all of your
pictures on the
report.
3. If you are given the
choice, choose where the photo will print in relation to the text and other
data in the Photo Placement box. You can choose from Above, Below,
Left or in the Center of
the text or the page. If you want to
reserve space for photos that are not currently in the .paf
file, click Reserve
Space for Missing Photos. Tip: When you mark the Use Photo Placeholders
option in Preferences the program displays gray boxes instead of photos
when you preview a
report. This allows you to check the placement of the
photos without waiting for them to load.
Click Preferences in the Reports
and Charts window and click Use Photo Placeholders. You
can also go
to Tools, Preferences, then Multimedia and check the box for Use
Photo
Placeholders.
