Determine Which Ordinances Have Already Been Done
Use of the PAF Insight Tool
Introduction:
PAF Insight may be
purchased through www.ohanasoftware.com for use at
home ($30 for a CD; $20 to download from the internet).
Use of PAF Insight for checking the IGI requires registration. If you are
not yet registered to use the IGI, obtain a User Name and Password by
Registering at
www.familysearch.org
and following the directions. Registration requires your church
membership number and your confirmation date.
Updating Procedure:
1.
Open your database in PAF 5.2. Click
Tools. Choose PAF Insight. Choose Search IGI.
PAF Insight will open your file if you have already signed on
with your database.
2. When you are successfully signed on to
www.familysearch.org
“Ready”
will appear in the
upper right hand corner of the Individual List.
3.
If you are not already signed on, PAF Insight
will prompt you to sign on. Do so. If you have not
yet filled out your information for signing on or if your
information is incorrect: Click PAF Insight
Tools. Click Options. Click
www.familysearch.org
tab.
Fill in your User Name and
Password information and click
OK.
4. The Region for the IGI search is defaulted
to All Regions. If desired, use the pull down menu to
select a specific region and narrow the search.
After you have signed on using this data base, PAF Insight will show all qualified records that have a missing or incomplete date or missing place in an individual ordinance field. (Note: Other Lists are available by clicking the down arrow by the List field. PAF Insight Help lists these additional options as well as more detailed instructions for using PAF Insight. FYI: Individuals are listed in order of RIN # when the program opens. You may change to alphabetical order by clicking on Primary Name. The Details view of the Individual List is shown when the program opens. You may view the information for each individual by clicking on the tabs for Spouses and Children, Notes, Individual, etc.
To Search and Update from the IGI
1.
Select an individual to search for by clicking an individual’s name in the
Individual List. Click
Search.
2.
Possible Matches will be added to the Duplicate Name Column with their % match
possibility
listed in the next column.
3.
The tabs that are pink indicate where there are differences. Your
database information will
appear on the left and the IGI information on the right.
Click on the pink tabs to compare
information.
4.
When you find information you would like transferred to your record, make
sure the box by
that information is checked and then click on Update.
A Source citation will be added to your records when you update from the IGI, unless you have chosen to have no sources added by selecting Tools, then Options, then Family Search, and last Don't add any sources.
New Individuals may often be added to your records: To add a spouse: Click add as new spouse. To add a new father or mother: Click add as new father or add as new mother. (Be careful— It will add another father or mother or spouse if you have one already in your file. If this occurs, the extra addition will need to be merged [via PAF Insight] or deleted.)
Save Your Information:
Information will not be saved in your database until you Save. This may be done "as you go" (File, then Menu, then Save.) or upon completion of the updating process. It is recommended that you Save frequently. PAF Insight will prompt you to Save when you leave the program if you have not already done so. After PAF Insight closes, you will need to back-up your file. (File, then Menu, then Save.) Your information is not saved to take home until you do a back-up
Hints for Searching the IGI
1.
If you have found a match for a person with little information such as a surname
only search,
update the information you want and do the search again.
The added information may be enough
to find further matches.
2.
If you have a married couple and are having trouble finding information on one
spouse, update
the one that you can find information for and then try the
other spouse again.
3. The IGI, and thus
PAF Insight, will not be able to find all misspellings of a name. If you
think that
a certain name could have been misspelled in a way that
wouldn’t be automatically found then try
altering the spelling. An example of this is
Aslachsdatter which can be found if spelled
Aslachsdatter, Aslachsdotter, Aslaksdatter, Aslaksdtr, etc.
but not if misspelled Aslachdatter
without the "s". Look at records where the individual is listed
as a spouse or parent and see if there
is a major discrepancy in spelling.
It is recommended that updates be limited to no more than 200 individuals per sitting.
PAF Insight Help includes more detailed instructions.
