Both activities may look impossible if you don’t have a plan of attack.

  • Plan of attack for eating an elephant or
  •  preparing a personal or family history.


  • Step 1.  Decide to do it !!!


  • Step 2.  Turn off the TV, and limit time on the
  •     internet, telephone, or other distractions.

1.  Size up the elephant              1.  Visualize completed history
  • 2.   Cut it into pieces          2.   Break history into parts


  • 3.   Eat one piece      3.   Work on one part at a time


  • 4.   Eat another piece, and          4.  Work on another part, and
  •       another, until finished                   another part, until finished


  • The key to completing these tasks is focusing
  •  on them and persisting until each task is finished.


  • Great intelligence is not necessary !

Timeline” for yourself or the person you are writing about

Step 8: Identify the parts (chapters) you want to include in the history.

Step 9:  Create a filing system with a folder for each planned chapter

Step 12:  Scan Photos (600 X 600 dpi) and save them in a <.jpg> file and print a proof copy

Step 13:  Turn off TV, Omit Other Distractions, and think
 about your descendants

Step 14:  Write first draft of one chapter
    •   Write the first chapter last
    •   Avoid breaking your flow of thoughts
    •     to make corrections or revisions until
    •     the first draft is completed.
    •   Rewrite and proofread
    •   Reward yourself by printing each
  •      chapter when you complete it.

    •    Hammermill Color Copy Paper


    •   acid – free

    •   28 pound paper so the photos on the
  •       other side will not show through
    •   96 brightness or higher

Step 17:  Determine type of binding and
                have book printed and bound
  • Per copy cost of hand stitched nylon binding of hard cover books
  •           1  -     5 copies    $21.50 each
  •           6  -   20 copies    $19.50 each
  •          20  -   50 copies    $16.50 each
  •          51  - 100 copies    $13.50 each

Step 18:  Pick up bound copies and share        them with your descendants

Step 19:  Turn on TV or look for another elephant to eat
